Business research chapter 3 MBS

                    Chapter 3 :

Problem definition, theoretical framework and hypothesis formulation

 Concept of Research Problem

A research problem is a specific issue, difficulty, contradiction, or gap in existing knowledge that a researcher seeks to investigate through a systematic study. It is the foundation of research because it identifies what needs to be studied and why the study is important.

In simple terms, a research problem is a question or situation that requires an answer or solution through scientific investigation. It guides the entire research process, including the formulation of objectives, hypotheses, data collection, and analysis.

Key Features of a Research Problem

  • It identifies a gap in existing knowledge.
  • It is clear, specific, and researchable.
  • It provides direction for the study.
  • It helps formulate research objectives and questions.
  • It contributes to solving practical or theoretical issues.

Example

Topic: Job Satisfaction of College Teachers

Research Problem: "What factors influence the job satisfaction of teachers in community colleges of Nepal?"

Thus, the research problem serves as the starting point and central focus of any research study.

(Concept of Research Problem)

(Steps of Research Problem Formulation)

Problem formulation is the process of gradually refining a broad research area into a clear, specific, and researchable problem. It is a very important stage in research because it gives direction to the whole study.

1. Identifying Broad Problem Area

This is the first step where the researcher selects a general field of interest.

Meaning:

It means choosing a wide topic where you want to do research.

Sources of ideas:

  • Personal experience
  • Workplace issues
  • Observation
  • Literature review
  • Reports and media

Example:

For  MBS students:

  • Banking sector
  • Human Resource Management
  • Customer satisfaction
  • Marketing performance

At this stage, the topic is very broad.

2. Divide the Subject Area into Sub-Areas

Here, the broad area is broken into smaller parts.

Example 1: Human Resource Management

  • Recruitment and selection
  • Training and development
  • Job satisfaction
  • Employee motivation
  • Performance appraisal

Example 2: Banking

  • Profitability
  • Liquidity
  • Customer satisfaction
  • Digital banking
  • Risk management

This helps to narrow down the focus.

3. Decide About an Area (Select One Topic)

From the sub-areas, the researcher selects one specific topic.

Example:

From HRM: ➡️ Job Satisfaction

From Banking: ➡️ Customer Satisfaction

Why this step is important:

  • Interest of researcher
  • Availability of data
  • Time and cost feasibility
  • Practical relevance

Now the topic becomes more focused.

4. Defining the Problem

In this step, the researcher clearly states the exact research problem in question form.

Example:

Selected Area: Job Satisfaction

Research Problem: “What factors affect the job satisfaction of teachers at Simara College?”

Another Example:

Selected Area: Customer Satisfaction

Research Problem: “How does digital banking affect customer satisfaction in commercial banks of Nepal?”

This becomes the main research question.

5. Decide About the Objectives

After defining the problem, research objectives are set to guide the study.

Example:

Research Problem: “What factors affect job satisfaction of teachers?”

Objectives:

  1. To measure the level of job satisfaction.
  2. To examine the effect of salary on job satisfaction.
  3. To analyze the impact of promotion opportunities.
  4. To study the effect of working environment.

Complete MBS Example (Summary)

Broad Area: HRM

Sub-Areas: Recruitment, Training, Job Satisfaction

Selected Area: Job Satisfaction

Research Problem:
“What factors influence job satisfaction of teachers at Simara College?”

Objectives:

  • Measure job satisfaction
  • Analyze salary effect
  • Analyze promotion effect
  • Analyze working environment effect

Conclusion

Problem formulation is the process of converting a broad topic into a clear, specific, and researchable problem. It helps the researcher decide what to study, why to study, and how to study it. A well-formulated problem is the foundation of a good research study.

Steps/Process in Problem Formulation

1. Identifying Broad Problem Area (वृहद् समस्या क्षेत्रको पहिचान)

(Literature Review)

➡️ Banking Sector

वा

➡️ Employee Management

➡️ Customer Satisfaction

2. Divide the Subject Area into Sub-Areas

Broad Area: Human Resource Management

Sub-Areas:

  • Recruitment and Selection
  • Training and Development
  • Employee Motivation
  • Job Satisfaction
  • Performance Appraisal

Broad Area: Banking

Sub-Areas:

  • Profitability
  • Liquidity
  • Credit Management
  • Customer Satisfaction
  • Digital Banking

3. Decide About an Area

Human Resource Management

➡️ Job Satisfaction

वा

Banking

➡️ Customer Satisfaction

4. Defining the Problem

➡️ Job Satisfaction

➡️ Customer Satisfaction

5. Decide About the Objectives

Research Problem: "तलब, पदोन्नति र कार्य वातावरणले शिक्षकहरूको कार्य सन्तुष्टिमा कस्तो प्रभाव पार्छ?"

Objectives:

Complete  Example

Broad Area

Human Resource Management

Sub-Areas

  • Recruitment
  • Training
  • Motivation
  • Job Satisfaction

Selected Area

Job Satisfaction

Research Problem

Objectives

Conclusion

Concept of Research Question

A research question is a clear, specific, and focused question that a researcher develops from a research problem in order to guide the entire research process. It is the central question that the study seeks to answer through systematic investigation, data collection, and analysis. In other words, a research question defines exactly what the researcher wants to find out in a study.

A research question acts as the foundation of a research study because it provides direction to the researcher. It helps in identifying what type of data is required, what methods should be used, and how the analysis should be conducted. Without a clear research question, a study may become broad, confusing, and meaningless.

The research question is derived from a research problem, which is usually broad in nature. The research question narrows down this problem into a specific inquiry. For example, if the research problem is “low profitability in commercial banks,” then a research question could be “What factors influence the profitability of commercial banks in Nepal?”

A good research question should be clear, specific, researchable, feasible, and relevant to the study area. It should avoid ambiguity and must be answerable through empirical evidence. It should also be closely related to the objectives of the research and help in formulating hypotheses where necessary.

Research questions can be of different types such as descriptive questions (what is happening), comparative questions (differences between groups), causal questions (cause and effect relationship), and exploratory questions (to explore new issues or phenomena).

In conclusion, a research question is the core element of any research work that transforms a general problem into a focused inquiry. It provides direction, clarity, and purpose to the research and ensures that the study remains systematic and meaningful.

It looks like you mean “types of research questions.” Here are the main types explained clearly for MBS students:

Types of Research Questions

Research questions can be classified into different types based on their purpose and nature of inquiry.

1. Descriptive Research Questions

Concept of Theoretical Framework

A theoretical framework is a structured explanation of the concepts, theories, and relationships that support a research study. It provides a foundation of theories on which the entire research is built and helps the researcher to understand, explain, and predict the relationship between different variables in a study.

In simple words, a theoretical framework is a “theory-based structure” that guides the research by linking the research problem with existing theories and established knowledge.

Meaning and Nature

A theoretical framework identifies and explains the key variables of a study and shows how they are related based on existing theories. It is developed by reviewing relevant literature and selecting suitable theories that best explain the research problem.

It is not just a description of theories, but a logical structure that connects theory with research design, objectives, and hypotheses.

Purpose of Theoretical Framework

The theoretical framework serves several important purposes:

  • It provides a scientific base for the study
  • It helps in understanding relationships between variables
  • It guides the development of hypotheses and research questions
  • It improves the clarity and direction of the research
  • It links the study with existing knowledge and literature

Components of Theoretical Framework

A theoretical framework generally includes:

  • Key concepts/variables (independent and dependent variables)
  • Relevant theories related to the topic
  • Relationships between variables
  • Assumptions of the study

Example: In a study on employee performance,

  • Training (Independent Variable)
  • Employee Performance (Dependent Variable)
  • Theory of Human Capital may explain the relationship

Importance of Theoretical Framework

A strong theoretical framework:

  • Makes research systematic and organized
  • Helps in data analysis and interpretation
  • Ensures logical consistency in the study
  • Provides a basis for generalization of results
  • Avoids confusion and keeps the study focused

Conclusion

A theoretical framework is the backbone of any research study. It connects research problems with established theories and provides a clear direction for conducting research. Without a theoretical framework, research lacks scientific foundation and logical structure.

(Human Capital Theory)

Need of Theoretical Framework in Research

A theoretical framework is a structure of concepts, theories, and principles that guides a research study. It provides a foundation for understanding the research problem and helps researchers conduct their studies systematically.

1. Clarifies the Variables

The theoretical framework helps identify and define the variables involved in the study, such as independent, dependent, and moderating variables.

Example: In a study on the impact of training on employee performance, training is the independent variable and employee performance is the dependent variable.

2. Provides a General Framework

It offers an overall structure and direction for the research, ensuring that the study remains focused and organized.

Example: A study on job satisfaction may be based on Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory.

3. Guides Data Collection

The theoretical framework helps researchers determine what data should be collected and how it should be collected.

Example: In customer satisfaction research, it helps identify the specific aspects of service quality that need to be measured.

4. Assists in Data Analysis

It provides a basis for analyzing and interpreting the collected data.

Example: Researchers can use statistical techniques to examine relationships predicted by the framework.

5. Helps Show Relationships

The framework explains the relationships among different variables in the study.

Example: It may show how employee motivation influences job performance.

6. Helps Test or Build Theory

Researchers can use the framework to test existing theories or develop new ones based on their findings.

Example: A study may test whether Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs applies to employees in a particular organization.

7. Helps in Interpretation

The theoretical framework helps researchers explain and interpret the results of their study in a meaningful way.

Example: If motivation is found to increase performance, the framework helps explain why this relationship exists.

8. Helps Clarify the Research Problem

It makes the research problem, objectives, and concepts clearer and more understandable.

Example: It helps researchers focus on the key factors affecting employee turnover.

Conclusion

The theoretical framework is the backbone of research. It clarifies variables, provides direction, guides data collection and analysis, shows relationships among variables, helps test theories, and supports the interpretation of findings. Therefore, it is an essential component of every research study.

Hypothesis: Meaning, Definition, Characteristics and Examples

Meaning of Hypothesis

A hypothesis is a tentative statement, assumption, or prediction about the relationship between two or more variables that can be tested through research.

In simple words, a hypothesis is an educated guess made by the researcher before collecting and analyzing data. It predicts what the researcher expects to find in the study.

Definition

According to Good and Hatt:

"A hypothesis is a proposition which can be put to test to determine its validity."

According to Kerlinger:

"A hypothesis is a conjectural statement of the relationship between two or more variables."

Concept of Hypothesis

Before conducting research, a researcher usually has some expectations about the possible outcome of the study. These expectations are expressed in the form of a hypothesis. It serves as a guide for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data.

A hypothesis does not state a proven fact. Rather, it is a statement that needs to be verified through scientific investigation.

Examples of Hypothesis

Types and Formats of Hypothesis

Introduction

A hypothesis is a tentative statement about a phenomenon or the relationship between variables that can be tested through research. Depending on the nature of the research problem and variables involved, hypotheses can be classified into different types and formats. The major types of hypotheses are:

  1. Descriptive Hypothesis
  2. Relational or Explanatory Hypothesis
  3. Directional and Non-directional Hypothesis
  4. Null and Alternative Hypothesis

1. Descriptive Hypothesis (वर्णनात्मक परिकल्पना)

A descriptive hypothesis predicts the existence, characteristics, or status of a single variable. It describes a situation without explaining relationships between variables.

Features

  • Deals with only one variable.
  • Describes facts, conditions, or characteristics.
  • Does not explain cause-and-effect relationships.

Examples

  • Most bank customers are satisfied with online banking services.
  • More than 60% of employees in an organization are satisfied with their jobs.
  • The average monthly income of small entrepreneurs is above Rs. 50,000.

Importance

Descriptive hypotheses help researchers understand and describe the current situation of a phenomenon.

2. Relational or Explanatory Hypothesis

Meaning

A relational hypothesis predicts a relationship between two or more variables. It explains how one variable is associated with another.

Features

  • Involves two or more variables.
  • Shows association or relationship.
  • Can explain cause-and-effect relationships.

Examples

  • Employee motivation is positively related to employee performance.
  • Advertisement expenditure affects sales volume.
  • Job satisfaction influences employee productivity.

Importance

This hypothesis helps researchers understand why and how variables are related.

3. Directional and Non-Directional Hypothesis

A. Directional Hypothesis (दिशात्मक परिकल्पना)

Meaning

A directional hypothesis specifies both the existence and direction of the relationship between variables.

Features

  • Indicates whether the relationship is positive or negative.
  • Based on previous theories or research findings.

Examples

  • Employee training positively affects employee performance.
  • Job stress negatively affects employee productivity.
  • Customer satisfaction increases customer loyalty.

Advantages

  • Provides a clear prediction.
  • Makes statistical testing easier.

B. Non-Directional Hypothesis (अदिशात्मक परिकल्पना)

Meaning

A non-directional hypothesis states that a relationship exists but does not specify its direction.

Features

  • Indicates only the existence of a relationship.
  • Does not predict whether the relationship is positive or negative.

Examples

  • There is a relationship between employee training and employee performance.
  • Job satisfaction is related to employee productivity.
  • Advertisement expenditure is associated with sales volume.

Importance

Useful when previous studies or theories do not provide enough evidence about the direction of the relationship.

4. Null and Alternative Hypothesis

A. Null Hypothesis (H₀) –

Meaning

A null hypothesis states that there is no relationship, no difference, or no effect between variables.

Features

  • Represents the status quo.
  • Tested statistically.
  • Usually written as H₀.

Examples

  • There is no significant relationship between employee training and employee performance.
  • Advertisement has no effect on sales.

Meaning of Theory in Research

A theory is a systematic set of ideas, concepts, and principles that explains why and how a particular phenomenon occurs. It provides a logical explanation of relationships among different variables and helps researchers understand, interpret, and predict events or behaviors.

In research, a theory serves as the foundation of a study. It guides researchers in identifying research problems, developing research questions, formulating hypotheses, collecting data, and interpreting findings. A theory is developed through observation, experience, testing, and evidence accumulated over time.

Definition:

A theory is a set of interrelated concepts, definitions, and propositions that explains and predicts phenomena by describing relationships among variables.

Simple Meaning

In simple words, a theory is an organized explanation of why and how something happens. It helps researchers understand a problem and provides a basis for conducting research.

Example

If a researcher studies employee performance, a motivation theory may be used to explain how factors such as rewards, recognition, and job satisfaction affect employee performance.

Conclusion

A theory is the backbone of research because it provides a framework for understanding, explaining, and predicting phenomena. It helps researchers conduct studies in a systematic and scientific manner.

"Theory is a set of interrelated constructs, definitions, and propositions that presents a systematic view of phenomena by specifying relations among variables."

Example: Managers should provide rewards to improve employee motivation.

3. Grounded Theory

  • A theory developed directly from collected data rather than from existing theories.
  • Researchers gather data, analyze patterns, and then build a new theory.
  • Commonly used in qualitative research.

Example: After interviewing entrepreneurs, a researcher develops a new theory about factors influencing business success.

Conclusion

Research theories help researchers describe, explain, predict, and understand phenomena. They provide a foundation for conducting systematic and scientific research.

Theory-Building Approaches: Inductive and Deductive (Detailed Explanation with Examples)

Theory-building approaches are methods used by researchers to develop knowledge and explain how things work. The two main approaches are inductive and deductive approaches.

1. Inductive Approach (Specific → General)

The inductive approach starts from specific observations or real-life data and moves toward a general theory or conclusion. In this approach, researchers do not begin with a theory. Instead, they first observe what is happening in the real world, collect data, and then develop a theory based on patterns found in that data.

Process:

Observation → Data Collection → Pattern Identification → Theory Development

Example:

Suppose a researcher studies several companies in Nepal. He observes that:

  • Employees who receive good training perform better
  • Employees who are motivated work more efficiently
  • Friendly work environments increase productivity

After studying many such cases, the researcher concludes a general theory:
👉 “Employee performance improves with training, motivation, and good work environment.”

Simple Understanding:

It is like building a rule after watching many examples.

2. Deductive Approach (General → Specific)

The deductive approach starts with an existing theory or general idea and then tests it in a specific situation. Researchers first develop a hypothesis from theory and then collect data to check whether the hypothesis is correct or not.

Process:

Theory → Hypothesis → Data Collection → Testing → Conclusion

Example:

A researcher uses an existing theory:
👉 “Motivated employees perform better.”

From this theory, he makes a hypothesis:
👉 “Employees of Company A who are motivated will show higher performance.”

Then he collects data from Company A to test whether the statement is true or not.

Simple Understanding:

It is like checking whether a known rule works in real life.

Key Difference (Easy Summary)

  • Inductive: Starts from observation and builds theory
  • Deductive: Starts from theory and tests it in reality

Conclusion

Inductive and deductive approaches are both important in research. Inductive helps in creating new theories, while deductive helps in testing existing theories. Together, they make research systematic, scientific, and reliable.

Meaning of Variables

A variable is a concept or characteristic that can change, vary, or take different values in a research study. It is not a fixed element; instead, it differs from person to person, place to place, or time to time. In research, variables are used to measure, compare, and analyze relationships between different factors.

Variables are very important because they help researchers to turn ideas into measurable information. Without variables, research cannot be conducted scientifically, because there would be nothing to observe or compare.

Simple Understanding:

A variable is anything that can increase, decrease, or change in form or amount.

Key Features of Variables:

  • It is changeable (not constant)
  • It is measurable or observable
  • It can be quantitative (numbers) or qualitative (categories)
  • It helps in scientific analysis and research

Examples of Variables:

  • Age of students (15, 20, 25 years)
  • Income level (low, medium, high)
  • Employee performance (poor, average, good)
  • Temperature (cold, warm, hot)
  • Profit of a company (increasing or decreasing)

Importance of Variables in Research:

  • Helps to define research problems clearly
  • Assists in collecting and analyzing data
  • Shows relationships between different factors
  • Makes research systematic and scientific
  • Helps in testing hypotheses

Conclusion:

Variables are the foundation of research work. They represent the factors that change and are studied to understand relationships, patterns, and outcomes in different situations.

Types of Variables in Research (Detailed Explanation)

In research, variables are factors that can change and affect the outcome of a study. Among different types, the most important are independent, dependent, moderating, and intervening variables.

1. Independent Variable (IV)

An independent variable is the factor that is manipulated, changed, or controlled by the researcher. It is considered the cause in a research relationship.

Explanation:

It is the variable that influences another variable.

Example:

  • Training given to employees
  • Advertising expenditure
  • Teaching method used in class

👉 Example sentence:
If a company increases employee training, then performance may improve. Here, training = independent variable.

2. Dependent Variable (DV)

A dependent variable is the factor that is affected or influenced by the independent variable. It is the result or outcome of the study.

Explanation:

It changes because of the independent variable.

Example:

  • Employee performance
  • Sales volume
  • Student marks

👉 Example sentence:
If training increases, employee performance improves. Here, performance = dependent variable.

3. Moderating Variable

A moderating variable is a factor that changes the strength or direction of the relationship between independent and dependent variables.

Explanation:

It shows when or under what condition the relationship becomes stronger or weaker.

Example:

  • Motivation level
  • Work experience
  • Gender or age

👉 Example: Training (IV) improves performance (DV), but the effect is stronger when employees have high motivation.
So, motivation = moderating variable.

4. Intervening Variable (Mediator Variable)

An intervening variable explains how or why the independent variable affects the dependent variable. It acts as a bridge between IV and DV.

Explanation:

It shows the process or mechanism of influence.

Example:

Training → Skill development → Performance

Here:

  • Training = Independent Variable
  • Skill development = Intervening Variable
  • Performance = Dependent Variable

👉 So, training improves skills, and skills improve performance.

Simple Summary

  • Independent Variable: Cause
  • Dependent Variable: Effect
  • Moderating Variable: Changes strength of relationship
  • Intervening Variable: Explains how relationship works

Conclusion

These variables are very important in research because they help to clearly define relationships, test hypotheses, and understand how and why changes happen in a study.

(Independent Variable)

(Dependent Variable)

(Moderating Variable)

(Motivation)

(Intervening Variable)

(Cause)
(Effect)
