Chapter 6 -Research proposal and report writing

Research Topic

A research topic is a specific subject, issue, or problem selected by a researcher for investigation and study. It gives the researcher a clear idea about what to study, whom to study, and in which area the study will be conducted.

In very simple words

A research topic is simply the subject that we want to study through research.

For example:
If a researcher wants to study why employees leave their jobs, the research topic could be:

“Factors Affecting Employee Turnover in Commercial Banks of Nepal.”

Characteristics of a Good Research Topic

  1. Clear – It should be easy to understand.
  2. Specific – It should not be too broad.
  3. Relevant – It should be related to the field of study.
  4. Researchable – Information and data should be available.
  5. Interesting – It should be interesting to the researcher.
  6. Manageable – It should be possible to complete within available time and resources.
  7. Original – It should provide some new or useful knowledge.
  8. Problem-oriented – It should focus on a particular issue or problem.
  9. Feasible – The researcher should have access to required data and resources.
  10. Ethical – The research should be possible without violating ethical principles.

Importance of a Research Topic

  • Provides direction to the research.
  • Helps to identify the research problem.
  • Helps in setting research objectives.
  • Guides the literature review.
  • Helps select an appropriate research methodology.
  • Helps identify the required data and information.
  • Makes the research focused and manageable.
  • Helps determine the scope of the study.

Example

Broad area: Human Resource Management
↓
Research topic: Employee Job Satisfaction
↓
Specific topic: “Factors Affecting Job Satisfaction of Employees in Commercial Banks of Nepal.”

Thus, a research topic is the starting point of a research study. It defines the particular subject or problem that the researcher intends to investigate systematically to obtain useful findings and knowledge.

Research Topic

  • Literature Review

The image explains “Factors to be considered while selecting a research topic.” In simple words, before choosing a research topic, a researcher should think about the following seven factors:

1. Brainstorming

The researcher should think of several possible topics before selecting one. Write down different ideas and consider which one can be researched properly.

Example: If you are interested in banking, you may think of topics like credit risk, profitability, customer satisfaction, digital banking, etc.

2. Deep Interest

The researcher should select a topic in which they have strong personal interest. Research takes considerable time and effort, so interest helps the researcher remain motivated.

Example: If you are interested in women entrepreneurship, researching women entrepreneurs will be easier and more enjoyable.

3. Knowledge of General Background

The researcher should have some basic knowledge about the topic. This helps in understanding the research problem, finding information, and developing objectives.

Example: Before researching “Credit Risk Management,” you should have a basic understanding of credit and banking.

4. Worth

The selected topic should be useful and meaningful. Research should contribute something to society, an organization, students, policymakers, or future researchers.

Example: Research on “Customer Satisfaction with Digital Banking” may help banks improve their services.

5. Manageable

The topic should be possible to complete within the available time, money, data, and resources. A topic that is too broad may be difficult to handle.

Example: “Impact of Banking on the World Economy” is too broad, while “Impact of Digital Banking on Customer Satisfaction in Selected Commercial Banks of Nepal” is more manageable.

6. Flexible

The topic should allow the researcher to make necessary changes or modifications during the research process if required.

For example, if sufficient data cannot be obtained from one group of respondents, the researcher may modify the population or study area.

7. Make a List of Keywords

The researcher should identify important words related to the topic. These keywords help in searching books, journals, articles, previous studies, and other sources.

Example: For a topic on digital banking, keywords may include:

  • Digital banking
  • Mobile banking
  • Customer satisfaction
  • E-banking
  • Online banking
  • Service quality

In short

A good research topic should be interesting, knowledgeable, useful, manageable, and flexible, and the researcher should brainstorm ideas and identify relevant keywords before finalizing the topic.

२. Deep Interest (गहिरो रुचि)

३. Knowledge of General Background

❌ “Impact of Banking on World Economy” —
✅ “Impact of Digital Banking on Customer Satisfaction of Selected Commercial Banks in Nepal” —

७. Make a List of Keywords

Keywords:

  • Digital Banking
  • Mobile Banking
  • Customer Satisfaction
  • E-Banking
  • Online Banking
  • Service Quality

Brainstorming → Interest → Knowledge → Worth → Manageable → Flexible → Keywords

Meaning of Research Proposal

A research proposal is a written plan for a research study. It explains what the researcher wants to study, why the study is important, and how the research will be done.

In simple words, a research proposal is like a roadmap of research. It gives a clear idea about the research topic, problem, objectives, methods of collecting data, and expected results.

It is prepared before starting the actual research. It helps the researcher conduct the study in a proper, systematic, and organized way.

Therefore, a research proposal is a plan that tells what to research, why to research, and how to research.

(Research Proposal)

Purposes of Research Proposal

A research proposal is a written plan that explains what research will be conducted, why it is needed, and how it will be conducted. The main purposes of a research proposal are:

1. To Provide Information

The proposal provides information about the research topic, problem, objectives, scope, and methodology. It helps others understand what the researcher intends to study.

2. To Prepare a Plan

It acts as a roadmap for the research. It clearly describes what will be done, how it will be done, what data will be collected, and how the data will be analyzed.

3. To Justify Rationale

The proposal explains why the research is necessary and important. It shows the reasons for selecting the research problem and the expected usefulness of the study.

4. To Form a Base for Contract

A research proposal can provide a basis for an agreement or contract between the researcher and the research organization, supervisor, or funding agency regarding the work to be carried out.

5. To Remind the Researcher

The proposal helps the researcher remember the objectives, activities, methods, and limitations of the study and keeps the research focused on the planned work.

6. To Inform About Research Methodology

It explains how the research will be conducted, including research design, population, sample, data sources, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques.

In simple words:

The main purpose of a research proposal is to provide information, make a research plan, justify the study, establish an agreement, guide the researcher, and explain the research methodology.

(Purposes of Research Proposal)

Types of Research Proposal

1. Solicited Proposal

Meaning

An External Solicited Proposal is a research proposal prepared and submitted in response to a request or invitation from an outside organization, agency, institution, or funding body.

In simple words, an external organization asks researchers to submit proposals, and the researcher prepares a proposal according to the organization's requirements.

Main Features

  • It is prepared at the request of an external organization.
  • The research topic or area may be specified by the organization.
  • The proposal must follow the organization's guidelines and requirements.
  • It may be prepared to obtain research funding or a research contract.
  • The organization evaluates the submitted proposals and selects the most suitable one.

Example

Suppose the Ministry of Education announces:

"Research proposals are invited to study the quality of higher education in Nepal."

A researcher prepares a proposal entitled:

"A Study on the Quality of Higher Education in Nepal"

and submits it to the Ministry according to its requirements.

This is an External Solicited Proposal because the proposal was prepared in response to an external organization's request.

2. Unsolicited Proposal

Meaning

An Unsolicited Proposal is a research proposal prepared and submitted without any formal request or invitation from the organization.

In simple words, the researcher develops a research idea independently and approaches an organization or institution with the proposal.

Main Features

  • No organization has formally requested the proposal.
  • The researcher identifies the research problem independently.
  • The researcher usually selects the research topic.
  • It reflects the researcher's own idea, interest, or initiative.
  • It may be submitted to an organization for approval, cooperation, or financial support.
  • It can introduce a new or innovative research idea.

Example

Suppose a college has not asked for any research proposal. A teacher independently identifies problems in the quality of education and prepares a proposal entitled:

"Assessing the Quality of Education in Simara College: Challenges and Opportunities for Improvement."

The teacher submits the proposal to the college administration for approval.

This is an Unsolicited Proposal because the college did not request the proposal.

3. Academic Research Proposal

Meaning

An Academic Research Proposal is a formal research plan prepared by a student or researcher and submitted to a college, university, supervisor, or academic institution as part of an academic program.

It explains what the researcher wants to study, why the study is important, and how the research will be conducted.

Academic Research Proposal: Prepared for academic research, thesis, or dissertation and submitted to a college or university.

Types of Research Proposal

१. External Solicited Proposal

२. Unsolicited Proposal

३. Academic Research Proposal

१. External Solicited Proposal

“A Study on Youth Unemployment in Nepal”

२. Unsolicited Proposal

“Assessing the Quality of Education in Simara College: Challenges and Opportunities for Improvement”

“Challenges of Women Entrepreneurship in Bara District”

३. Academic Research Proposal

Academic Research Proposal

External Solicited Proposal Unsolicited Proposal Academic Research Proposal

Exam

Structure of Research Proposal

A research proposal is a written plan that explains what the researcher intends to study, why the study is necessary, and how the research will be conducted. A good research proposal generally contains the following components:

1. Title

The title is the name of the research study. It should be clear, specific, concise, and related to the research problem.

Example:
“Impact of Digital Banking on Customer Satisfaction of Commercial Banks in Nepal.”

2. Background of the Study

The background provides general information about the research topic. It explains the situation, context, existing condition, and why the topic is important.

Example:
If the topic is digital banking, the background may discuss the growth of mobile banking, internet banking, digital payment systems, and their importance to bank customers.

3. Statement of the Problem

This section clearly describes the problem or issue that the research intends to investigate. It identifies what is unknown, unsatisfactory, or needs further study.

Example:
Although digital banking services are increasing, some customers may still face problems such as security concerns, technical difficulties, and poor service quality.

4. Theoretical Framework

The theoretical framework explains the theories and concepts that provide a foundation for the research. It shows how existing theories are related to the research problem and variables.

Example:
A study on customer satisfaction may use Service Quality Theory to explain the relationship between service quality and customer satisfaction.

5. Statement of Hypothesis

A hypothesis is a testable statement or prediction about the relationship between two or more variables.

Example:
“Digital banking service quality has a significant positive effect on customer satisfaction.”

Note: Not every research study requires a hypothesis, especially some qualitative studies.

6. Definition of Terminologies

This section defines the important terms and concepts used in the research so that readers understand them clearly and consistently.

Example:

  • Digital Banking: Banking services provided through electronic or digital channels.
  • Customer Satisfaction: The degree to which customers feel satisfied with the banking services received.

7. Significance of the Study

It explains who will benefit from the research and how the findings will be useful.

Example:
The study may be useful to:

  • Bank managers for improving digital services.
  • Customers for understanding available services.
  • Policymakers for developing appropriate policies.
  • Future researchers for further studies.

8. Limitations of the Study

Limitations are the constraints or weaknesses that may affect the research. They explain what the study cannot fully cover.

Examples:

  • Limited time and budget.
  • Small sample size.

Writing a Research Report

Exam Answer Format

1. Introduction

Writing a research report is the process of presenting the findings, analysis, conclusions, and recommendations of a research study in a systematic, logical, clear, and organized written form.

A research report communicates what the researcher studied, how the research was conducted, what was found, and what conclusions were drawn.

2. Meaning of Writing a Research Report

Writing a research report involves converting the results of a completed research study into a formal written document. It requires the researcher to organize the research information logically and present it in a way that readers can easily understand and evaluate.

The report should be objective, accurate, clear, concise, and properly documented.

3. Major Steps in Writing a Research Report

1. Logical Analysis of the Subject Matter

The researcher first organizes and analyzes the subject matter logically. The information may be arranged:

  • Topically – according to different topics or themes.
  • Chronologically – according to the sequence of events or time.

2. Preparation of the Final Outline

A final outline is prepared to provide a proper structure to the report. It determines the order in which different sections and topics will be presented.

3. Preparation of the Rough Draft

The researcher prepares the first written version of the report based on the outline. At this stage, all important ideas, facts, findings, and interpretations are included.

4. Rewriting and Polishing

The rough draft is carefully reviewed and improved. The researcher corrects grammar, spelling, organization, repetition, clarity, and factual errors.

5. Preparation of Final Bibliography

All sources used in the research are properly listed in the bibliography or reference section. This gives credit to the original sources and increases the credibility of the report.

6. Writing the Final Draft

Finally, the researcher incorporates all corrections and prepares the final version of the research report. The final draft should be clear, systematic, accurate, and professionally presented.

4. Characteristics of Good Research Report Writing

A good research report should be:

  1. Clear – ideas should be easy to understand.
  2. Logical – information should follow a proper sequence.
  3. Accurate – facts and figures should be correct.
  4. Objective – personal bias should be avoided.
  5. Concise – unnecessary information should be avoided.
  6. Systematic – all sections should be properly organized.
  7. Simple – language should be appropriate and understandable.
  8. Well-documented – sources should be properly cited and referenced.

5. Conclusion

Writing a research report is the final and important stage of the research process. It presents the entire research work in an organized written form. A well-written research report helps readers understand the problem, methodology, findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the study. Therefore, the researcher should follow a logical structure and maintain clarity, accuracy, objectivity, and proper documentation while writing the report.
